My book was going into its second print, and I needed to find another editor right away as the person I hired for my first print-editing job was a real nightmare.  I literally had only a few weeks to find another editor for a complete re-edit of my published book so that I could submit it.

I sat down one day and began searching online for the holy grail of affordable, fast-working editors.  Frustrated and bleary-eyed after searching the internet for literally hours, I sent a mass email to everyone I knew, both personally and professionally, asking – rather, begging – for an introduction to a reasonably priced editor who could finish the project by the time I needed it.

When I was in the UCLA MFA Screenwriting program, it was extremely competitive.  My peers and I were always work-shopping and re-writing scripts in addition to the standard course load of being a Masters of Fine Arts Graduate student.  I was very passionate about filmmaking and I loved what I was doing, but being brought up in Westchester, NY, I had no contacts to speak of in the entertainment industry.

Between my part-time tutoring job and my course load, I was so busy at UCLA that I had no time for an internship or networking. Whenever I was invited out to something I always had the dilemma of, “Well, if I go, I won’t be able to write for four hours, I’ll get behind, have to rush it to deadline, and then my script will suck.” 

As part of the program at UCLA, celebrated directors, producers and writers would come and speak or do a screening of their latest project for us. Inevitably, there would be a Q&A where we would be able to ask questions and learn about their craft and hopefully apply some of what we’d learned to our own writing style.  Yet, as anybody who has ever been to a celebrity Q&A knows, as much as you think it’s a place to network and you fantasize before about the conversations you’ll have with the speaker, the fantasy rarely if ever matches the reality. At the end of the Q & A, you come away with some useful advice and the harsh reality that the celebrated writer/director you just spent two hours listening to is not going to be your new best friend or even remember your name.

While I was at UCLA, I learned a great deal of writing from the professors and feedback from the other students, but I never got to network as much as I could have or should have.  When I think back on that experience, I always wonder what would have happened if I had had a way to network more, gain access to the people I wanted to work for and make money doing it.

The great thing about Flinja is that you can actually gain access to the people you want to work for.  You may not be assistant directing on Ben Stiller’s next movie project, but you could wash his car or clean out his garage simply because you both went to UCLA and he wants to give back.  Scott Rosenberg might not ask you for notes on his next script, but you could help him organize his CD collection in his office. James Franco probably doesn’t have time to play World of Warcraft with you or give you acting tips, but you could pick up his dry cleaning.  

These tasks may not relate to your major, or even be things that you’re pumped up about doing, but they will give you an entry level position with people and companies like you truly admire and look great on your resume.  Imagine going on an interview for that first job you really want, already having worked for an impressive UCLA alumni.  If nothing else, it’s a conversation starter that will take you out of the standard cliché interview and catapult you to the list of interesting potential employees.
