Tips for Landing a Paid Internship

Most people who attempt to land a position as an intern are college students.  This is because internships provide the necessary experience that is needed to graduate from their university and build a career.  However, a busy college student who must try to balance his/her schoolwork, a job they might currently have, and any free time that they manage to obtain, cannot waste their time trying to research or find out how and where to grab a position as a paid intern.  To avoid squandering your time, join Flinja. Flinja is an online college service provider marketplace for college students, faculty members, as well as alumni, who can offer services or jobs as well as hire other people for the unique skills they will provide.  You can depend on these people as they are from your school, guaranteeing that they are serious sellers.  Below are several tips to keep in mind when searching for and obtaining a paid internship on this college service provider marketplace.

Be polite, professional, and personable.  When messaging or talking to the person offering the internship on Flinja, keep the three Ps in mind.  These people are looking for a likable and enthusiastic young college student who will also take their work very seriously.  No one wants to train a college student with an attitude.  Having these traits will make you seem like a great candidate in the employer’s eyes.

Have clear goals in mind.  An employer wants a focused and determined person who they can trust to remain with their company.  If you have clear goals, they can have confidence that they are not wasting time and money to train you.  You will also seem more reliable and professional if you have realistic ambitions.  Try to avoid using terms such as possibly, probably, or maybe when sharing your thoughts about your future.

Be punctual.  If you are late for meetings, interviews, or even if you take an unnecessary amount of time to reply to messages, this will make you seem like an undesirable candidate for the specific internship.  Being on time will make you look professional and reliable.  When you are late they will imagine you being behind schedule for deadlines or important meetings as an intern.

Pick an internship that you are happy to have a long-term occupation in.  If you do not want a job in the company that you are applying as an intern for, then don’t submit an application for an internship there.  You need to be happy with that job as they are expecting you to work there as a regular employee after your internship ends.  Search on the college service provider marketplace for your preferred career that requires unique skills that you possess.

Using these tips will help ensure you a position as an intern in your desired company.   Don’t hesitate!  Visit Flinja, the best college service provider marketplace today so as to find the perfect paid internship!

Flinja Success Story – Student Guided Tours

So simple and effective, Flinja is the only place I recommend to my friends on campus.

Courtney, a student at UCLA, talks about her experience using Flinja to really boost her summer tour guide business.

I am a campus tour guide, and during the summer months I also run my own tour guide business in Los Angeles.  Nothing has been more thrilling than seeing how my business has expanded since joining Flinja.

After working my first year at UCLA as a campus tour guide, I decided to start my own local tour guide business to show students and tourists around LA.

I loved the flexibility of being able to make my own hours, but getting consistent work was harder than I had imagined – there were weeks when my tour calendar was completely empty.

Feeling dejected over my part-time business, I called up a close friend, and fellow UCLA student, to discuss my state of affairs.  He laughed and immediately suggested I hop online and sign up with Flinja where he was getting more jobs offering his services as a computer repairman than he knew what to do.

Now, not only has my business grown hundredfold in such a short amount of time since signing up on Flinja, but I’ve also personally hired other Flinjas – the quality of students and alumni to choose from to get the job done is remarkable!

As a female private tour guide, safety is always a concern, and so I’ve never been a fan of using Craigslist to get more work.  But with Flinja, I love knowing that my clients are in the UCLA network and that I can see who they are as well as get to read their reviews and ratings.  The well-thought-out secure payment system is also awesome, as I never have to worry about whether or not I will get paid.

Flinja has created an experience that is beyond compare!

Flinja Success Story – Student Manuscript Editing for Non-Fiction Book

Getting the work completed quickly and competently is one of the biggest benefits of using Flinja!

Steven, an author and UCLA alumna, shares his experience on Flinja and how he hired a UCLA English Grad student to edit his entire non-fiction book in just 12 days at a cost way below the quotes he had received on other sites.

I was pretty certain that I wouldn’t be able to find a book editor who could complete the task I needed in such a short amount of time, and for the price I could afford.

But I was definitely mistaken!

My book was going into its second print, and I needed to find another editor right away as the person I hired for my first print-editing job was a real nightmare.  I literally had only a few weeks to find another editor for a complete re-edit of my published book so that I could submit it.

I sat down one day and began searching online for the holy grail of affordable, fast-working editors.  Frustrated and bleary-eyed after searching the internet for literally hours, I sent a mass email to everyone I knew, both personally and professionally, asking – rather, begging – for an introduction to a reasonably priced editor who could finish the project by the time I needed it.

Fortuitously, a friend, and former classmate of mine at UCLA, suggested I check out a site called Flinja, where I could hire UCLA students and alumni to get the job done at an affordable price. I grabbed my UCLA .edu address and quickly signed up on Flinja where I began browsing through the many student and alumni service providers proficient in book editing.

The amazing thing is, after searching through the list of Flinjas for only a few minutes, I had access to hundreds of potential editors!

If I had gone another route, I would have had to pay close to $3,000 with at least a month’s turnaround, but instead, $500 and 12 days later, my re-edited manuscript was in my inbox.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience with Flinja and will be signing onto Flinja when I need work done on my next book!

Making Money & Contacts On Flinja

When I was in the UCLA MFA Screenwriting program, it was extremely competitive.  My peers and I were always work-shopping and re-writing scripts in addition to the standard course load of being a Masters of Fine Arts Graduate student.  I was very passionate about filmmaking and I loved what I was doing, but being brought up in Westchester, NY, I had no contacts to speak of in the entertainment industry.

Between my part-time tutoring job and my course load, I was so busy at UCLA that I had no time for an internship or networking. Whenever I was invited out to something I always had the dilemma of, “Well, if I go, I won’t be able to write for four hours, I’ll get behind, have to rush it to deadline, and then my script will suck.”

As part of the program at UCLA, celebrated directors, producers and writers would come and speak or do a screening of their latest project for us. Inevitably, there would be a Q&A where we would be able to ask questions and learn about their craft and hopefully apply some of what we’d learned to our own writing style.  Yet, as anybody who has ever been to a celebrity Q&A knows, as much as you think it’s a place to network and you fantasize before about the conversations you’ll have with the speaker, the fantasy rarely if ever matches the reality. At the end of the Q & A, you come away with some useful advice and the harsh reality that the celebrated writer/director you just spent two hours listening to is not going to be your new best friend or even remember your name.

While I was at UCLA, I learned a great deal of writing from the professors and feedback from the other students, but I never got to network as much as I could have or should have.  When I think back on that experience, I always wonder what would have happened if I had had a way to network more, gain access to the people I wanted to work for and make money doing it.

The great thing about Flinja is that you can actually gain access to the people you want to work for.  You may not be assistant directing on Ben Stiller’s next movie project, but you could wash his car or clean out his garage simply because you both went to UCLA and he wants to give back.  Scott Rosenberg might not ask you for notes on his next script, but you could help him organize his CD collection in his office. James Franco probably doesn’t have time to play World of Warcraft with you or give you acting tips, but you could pick up his dry cleaning.

These tasks may not relate to your major, or even be things that you’re pumped up about doing, but they will give you an entry level position with people and companies like you truly admire and look great on your resume.  Imagine going on an interview for that first job you really want, already having worked for an impressive UCLA alumni.  If nothing else, it’s a conversation starter that will take you out of the standard cliché interview and catapult you to the list of interesting potential employees.

With Flinja, you have access to the alumni in your school like never before.  I just wish Flinja was around when I was a struggling MFA film student at UCLA.

~David Schneider, former UCLA MFA Screenwriting student

We Want To Hear Your Flinja Stories!

Hey there, I’m David, a Flinja wordsmith. Each story is about a voyage, and each time you post a job or hire a Flinja, it’s another story. We’d like to hear your stories!

I’m always writing stories – both on paper and through video.  I’ve been a screenwriter, and I’ve worked in film and TV, along with sales and marketing. And now, I have the awesome job of helping tell the Flinja story – which involves you!

After you post or complete a job, share something of your story with us.  Call to mind your Flinja experience and let us know how things went from your point of view.

Are you a member of a UCLA Honor Society, a vegan, a yoga devotee, or a Bruins mascot? Are there any difficulties you faced? What did you glean from the experience? Share with us whether you had a good time, who you met, and what you learned. And if your story moves us in some way, we may even share it with the Flinja community.

Since we’re going to get to know one another better, here’s a little bit more about me:  I grew up close to the Big Apple.  When I was born, my head was so large that my parents thought I looked like an alien. When I was little, I used to strain and try to turn myself into The Hulk. I can speak Patois. Okay, okay, enough about me!

We’re thrilled that you’ve made Flinja your job spot, and remember to tell us your stories!
